Together Strong

“For the last 15 years, we’ve built Facebook and Instagram into digital equivalents of the town square, where you can interact with lots of people at once. Now we’re focused on building the digital equivalent of the living room, where you can interact in all the ways you’d want privately.” So wrote Mark Zuckerberg on his Instagram in April 2019. Zuckerberg’s ambition fits seamlessly with the current times. After all, our open society as we have known it since the 1990s is transforming into one that is more fearful and less free. Humans are social animals, but as soon as anxiety and uncertainty increase, people seek protection and safety. Being together is no longer about the the-more-souls-the-more-joy principle. People need much more security and intimacy.

Being useful

People also seek support from each other more often in uncertain times. Especially within their own bubble, among like-minded people. This creates a sense of belonging and power. People realize that they can get more done together than alone. Society is on the move. Therefore, in the search for grip and control, people like to take action. People like to participate in useful communities. The unconscious feeling of anxiety may not disappear, but it is nice to be useful, to look after each other and to care for each other.

Important developments towards 2030

  • People increasingly seek support from each other
  • Being together is about safety, security and intimacy
  • We are looking for like-minded people; people with the same beliefs
  • The need to be useful is growing
